The Right Way to Use Sunscreen on Indian Skin

A 5 min read guide covering: Sunscreen, Pigmentation, Skin Care Basics.
Sun protection is the single most under-used tool in Indian skincare. Most patients I see with pigmentation, melasma or early signs of ageing have never used sunscreen consistently — often because of common myths about it causing darkening or breakouts.
For Indian skin tones, a broad-spectrum SPF 30-50 sunscreen protecting against both UVA and UVB is ideal. The formula matters less than the habit: apply a full fingertip's worth to the face, 15-20 minutes before stepping out, and reapply every 3-4 hours if you're outdoors.
Gel-based or matte-finish sunscreens work well for oily, acne-prone skin, while cream-based formulas suit dry skin better. If you're undergoing any pigmentation or laser treatment, sunscreen isn't optional — it's the single factor that determines whether your results last.
A simple rule I give patients: if you remember only one skincare step today, make it sunscreen. Everything else — serums, treatments, procedures — works better when the skin is protected in the first place.
